Walk into any bookstore, and you'll see immediately the tables stacked with bestsellers. Bold covers, catchy titles, and "TOP 10" stickers. Everyone is talking about them.
And there's nothing wrong with that. Bestsellers earn their places because they resonate with the masses. They tap into themes that are widely appealing, familiar tropes, accessible writing, and popular trends that spark conversation and create community.
But the question no one asks: Does popular always mean personal?
Most of us are heavily influenced by bestseller lists and pretty covers. I've been there too choosing a book because it looked compelling, only to find it lacked depth or emotional pull. Sometimes it’s a hit, and sometimes it’s a miss.
Every once in a while, you open a book that’s not trending, and something inside you shifts. You read a single line. A paragraph stops you. A quote feels like it was written for you or your current season in life.
These are the books that stay with you. These are the books that are not overly publicized. These are the books that quietly transform you.
Hidden gems often carry a different kind of depth—nuanced characters, layered storytelling, and emotional honesty. They don’t rely on hype but on the craft. They make you feel warm inside. They make you reflect. They make you laugh. They make you see parts of your past to understand more clearly.
When you finish the final page, you don’t just feel accomplished, you feel changed because the story was unwavering.
Now, to be clear, bestselling authors can write incredible stories. Many do. However, trends make them predictable and safe. When you move beyond bestsellers, you open yourself up to something extraordinary voices you have not heard, perspectives you didn’t know you needed.
That is why I curate the way I do. When I select a book, I’m not chasing trends. I’m looking for stories that step beyond the surface—writing that lingers, characters that feel alive, narratives that expand your mind instead of just entertaining it. Your next book might not be the one everyone is posting about yet—but it will be if you let me choose your next read. Let me show you true writing.
In my next blog, I will give you 5 Hidden Gems—worth your wait!
